Finishers: 5074 males, 516 females
All three Sault competitors completed their first Boston Marathon. Ross Mervyn entered last year's event but dropped out after 19 miles because of heat stroke. Former Sault native, Norm Abbott from Whitby, Ontario, finished in 2:57. Lou Orazietti, setting a personal best time, completed his 7th marathon.
Toshihiko Seko, 24, of Japan finished first and set a new Boston Marathon record of 2:09:26. Bill Rodgers failed in his bid for an unprecedented fourth straight victory. First Canadian to finish was Brian Maxwell in 20th place in a time of 2:14:57.
New Zealander Allison Roe, 24, ran the world's second fastest women's marathon in winning her division in a time of 2:26:45. The first female Canadian was Jacqueline Gareau of Montreal. Gareau was fifth in 2:31:26 and was the winner of last year's race.
