A big race with a small-race spirit, the Skylon Marathon features an international border crossing, a finish line just a few steps from one of the natural wonders of the world, and a race organization second to none. The beautiful, flat course starts in Delaware Park, Buffalo, crosses to Canada via the Peace Bridge, and follows the Niagra River to the Falls.
Over one-quarter of the finishers were from Canada, but Americans took the first 24 positions, with Russ Evans of Hamilton, timed in 2:33:09, being the first Canadian to finish, and Juanita Hefferman of Toronto the first Canadian women, with 3:08:01. Dave Smith of California and David Severance of New Hampshire both beating the standard to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon Trial, Smith just missing the course record by 10 seconds. Victoria Kraft of Syracuse won the women's division in 2:52:19.
