The Detroit Marathon, a 17 year old race, changed its course and went international in 1978. A mere 125 of the 2980 finishers were from Canada, and Barry Ault of Huntsville Ontario led the small Canadian field with a 31st place time of 2:31:36. Eight of the US runners qualified for the US Olympic Marathon Trial by finishing under the trial standard of 2:21:54.
