The 1978 race, the eleventh, had a starting field of 578 runners, but warm conditions, coupled with the guarantee of an official time for those dropping out at check points along the course, produced a low finishing rate.Ron Flint of Toronto finished first in 2:29:36 with Margaret Copeland of Toronto winning the women's section in 3:07:00.
Brian McGardy, age 22, of Sault Ste Marie finished in 4:13:02.
