Richard Hughson of Kitchener looked like a sure winner, holding a lead of over a minute at the 40 km point, but there he hit the wall. After running 40 km at a 2:14 pace, Hughson took over 10 minutes to complete the last 2 km, and was passed by winner Tom Fleming of New York (2:17:26) and Jerome Drayton (2:18:07). Hughson finished 3rd in 2:18:48. The race started at York University in North York and finished at Harbourfront in downtown Toronto. A trip to the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan was offered as a prize to the first Canadian finisher and was won by Drayton.
Ron Wallingford of Sudbury won the Master's division in a time of 2:38:22.
Conrad Bobiwash of Blind River finished in 2:57:00.
